Senior Legal Counsel, Customer Transactions Legal

The Customer Transactions Legal team works closely with the Business & Private Bank and Corporate & Institutional Bank businesses, supporting the execution of their strategies, while pro-actively managing legal risk within a changing regulatory landscape.

You will be primarily responsible for providing end-to-end legal support in relation to lending transactions.  You will work closely with a supportive national team that is geographically distributed across Australia to ensure our stakeholders receive timely legal support to deliver the right outcomes for NAB and our customers.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver accurate, commercially relevant, timely, and strategic legal advice to enable lending transactions on a bilateral, club and syndicated basis
  • Advise on and facilitate a variety of transactions and projects at a strategic level, including, where appropriate, reviewing legal documentation to ensure legal compliance and manage legal risks
  • Lead/support initiatives aimed to ensure that the business is simple, fast, resilient and more customer centric, whilst meeting legal and regulatory requirements
  • Engage, monitor and supervise external legal advisers, manage external and internal legal adviser relationships, and facilitate communication between external legal advisers with internal NAB stakeholders
  • Identify and implement process improvements/efficiencies, evaluate performance and contain/monitor legal costs
  • Mentor and coach junior lawyers within the team

What you’ll bring:

You are an experienced lawyer who thrives on legal excellence and professionalism in actively managing legal risk in line with commercial and strategic priorities.

You also have:

  • Bachelor of Laws qualification and admission to legal practice in Australia
  • Minimum 7 years PQE at a legal firm or in-house
  • Demonstrated front-end banking & finance transactional experience essential (including APLMA documentation)
  • Effective stakeholder engagement skills, with a collaborative and partnering approach
  • Excellent organisational skills, including prioritisation and time management
