Role Summary:

The APAC General Counsel will act as the regional legal advisor for Smith APAC, providing expert legal guidance to ensure compliance with the legal frameworks of all operating jurisdictions. This role involves leading the regional legal team to manage legal risks and adhere to global regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic legal advice to the sales team on various issues, including contract review, regulatory and trade compliance, and intellectual property etc.
  • Prepare, draft, and review legal documents, such as international commercial sales and purchasing contracts, and employment agreements.
  • Advise on and standardize agreements and contracts to minimize risk and maximize legal rights.
  • Research and analyze trade related and data privacy legislation, regulations and guidance.
  • Identify and assess legal risks, developing solutions to mitigate them.
  • Educate and train employees on legal and regulatory matters to ensure the adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Provide counsel on international business transactions, liability claims and the advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits.
  • Collaborate with other departments to offer legal support and ensure alignment with company objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of internal governance policies and manage the impact of external factors.
  • Consult with colleagues specializing in relevant legal areas to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree holder in law or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a major law firm, or equivalent in-house experience.  A combination of law firm and in-house experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in trade regulations and date privacy, preferred.
  • Result-oriented and self-driven, with strong leadership, problem solving and execution skills.
  • Ability to engage with multiple levels within the organization and across various jurisdictions.
  • Must be comfortable analyzing novel and complex legal issues and help design a risk base and practical solutions in situations where multiple laws may apply or conflict with one another.
  • Capable of working independently while thriving in a global, dynamic and team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • High ethical standards and integrity.
  • Proficient in Office 365 applications.
  • Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English and Mandarin.
