About the Role

We're seeking an experienced attorney to join our team as Head of Legal. In this role, you'll build and lead our legal function while accelerating enterprise sales through efficient contract management and risk mitigation that enables rapid, responsible growth. As we are a growing startup, you'll have the opportunity to shape our legal strategy and processes from the ground up while working closely with our sales team to drive business growth. You will combine your legal expertise, business aptitude, and insight to design to support a world-class, agile commercial and transactional legal function.

What You'll Do

  • Provide comprehensive legal support across commercial functions, including sales, marketing, customer success, and product development

  • Partner directly with our sales team to accelerate deal velocity while maintaining appropriate risk parameters

  • Engage with go-to-market business partners to understand their operational objectives and challenges, serving as a strategic partner

  • Review, draft, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including customer, service, license, consulting, vendor, and data processing agreements

  • Create and improve contract templates, playbooks, and processes to support the business team

  • Establish and optimize efficient processes for contract review, approval, and storage that can scale with our growth

  • Provide strategic guidance to assess and mitigate legal and business risk

  • Create and implement legal policies and procedures that protect company interests while maintaining startup speed

  • Work closely with procurement teams at enterprise customers to navigate their requirements and processes

  • Conduct or coordinate research on various legal issues to support the go-to-market teams

  • Drive continuous improvement in our contract management processes to reduce cycle times and improve efficiency

What Will Help You Succeed

Must-Haves

  • JD and admitted to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction

  • 3+ years combined experience in law firm and/or in-house legal department

  • Commercial pragmatism: Ability to balance legal risk with business objectives

  • Exceptional contract drafting and negotiation skills

  • Strong business acumen and ability to work cross-functionally

  • Self-starter mentality with the ability to thrive as sole legal team member (i.e. an Alembic-ready lawyer)

  • Experience with enterprise software sales cycles

Should-Haves

  • 6+ years combined experience in law firm and/or in-house legal department

  • Experience at both law firm and in-house roles

  • Track record of improving contract processes and reducing cycle times

  • Background in technology transactions

  • Experience working with procurement teams at large enterprises

Nice-to-Haves

  • Prior experience as first/sole legal hire at a startup

  • SaaS/enterprise software industry experience

  • Experience with privacy law (GDPR, CCPA)

  • Experience building and scaling legal operations
